It’s been an… intense day the first one. As in first 24 hours, ’cause up until now a day was much smaller in my conception. A simple argument to why it was such a rush: I’m not tired at all. And trust me – I AM tired. I just don’t realize it yet.
Getting across Romania took more than expected, because there seems to be no other moron such as myself that is headed the same chaotic direction, but also owns a car, to take me from one end to the other.
My route yesterday was roughly: start in Cluj-Napoca, getting to or close to Sebeș by 5 a.m. (I can’t say for certain whether or not I was IN the city… ’cause, I repeat, it was fucking 5 in the morning). A minibus took me to Sibiu where I met with the only one person that knew me since I left. I bought a compact photo camera to make the quick filming easier (with the money I promised my brother – you still have two mil with Tudor, don’t spend it all in one place).
Heading from Sibiu to Râmnicu Vâlcea, I got off in Clineni (I think), at a truck parking, where I tried my luck with a direct ride to the border. No dough.
It was in Râmnicu Vâlcea where I made my first mistake, by having the driver (Ilie, Gheorghe being the co-pilot) drop me at the closest end of the city, as opposite to the farthest, also known as the end where cars leave, going the direction I’m headed, as opposite to the end where cars arrive FROM where I came. There I spend up to 2 hours trying to get a ride. And that is also where I met my first genuine contributor, Ina. She works in a marble-board production shop – they basically make funeral plaques. I know… very funny. I was almost getting worried about my round silhouette, when I spotted her and began the real deal that this trip is all about: I offered to do her choirs of brooming the steps and mopping the floor, in exchange for sandwiches.
I still feel guilty for not insisting to actually do it. She did refuse me 4 times. About the same number of refusals as the sandwiches I got.
Afterwards I crossed the city on my scooter, which was the hottest thing I’ve ever done in my life, and not in a “you’d fuck me” way. I mean sticky sweat dripping into my underwear from my aching back. From the (now) right end of the city I got picked up by two guys that got me to Drăgășani, while methodically scarring the living shit out of my optimistic view of Bulgaria.
I left Drăgășani by truck, with the driver taking me to Craiova, where I am left less than 100 km away from the border. Which I will cross by ferry, but this will definitely come in the morning. I’ll try to get some sleep in one of the customs waiting rooms, so I don’t get all of my shit stolen and body raped. I hope tomorrow I’ll be able to find someone to take me across Bulgaria in one bite, heading either to Turkey or Greece. (In case I get to post this on time – which one you prefer?).
Message from Gheorghe, one of the drivers in a truck. He didn’t speak English, but I think he memorized this from somewhere.
This is Ina. She’s the first one that helped me with food.
Remember I told you how busy the 1st day was and how I’m gonna sleep it off in the custom office? Well, I’m in Greece. Haven’t slept yet. I wanna thank miss Carmen and mister Marius from the Romanian Customs Office, that treated me the ferry ride, crossing to Bulgaria last night. Yes. I got the ferry ride for free. That’s gotta be the absolute confirmation of my philosophy regarding this trip.
I found a truck driver on the ferry that took me all the way through Bulgaria in the same night (with a short stop in Sofia I was too busy to witness – I was editing the movie). I’m gonna try to find a place to sleep for the day, because I’m wasted and I’ll get back to you in a couple of days, whenever I have something new and the capabilities to post it.
I’m beginning to re-think my “Go East!” philosophy. It had the point of being overwhelming and to see if I can make it… but I barely made it this far. And now I’m lost and exhausted. It’s fun, in a very it sucks so bad way.
I read all your messages. Nothing relevant. Let me know if someone has health issues over this, has anyone committed suicide? Let me know in time, so I can post some flower photos or live video blog some cute cats.
